This was writtern by Alan Brennert, who also wrote "Mo'laki." While his other novel left me crying through every chapter, "Honolulu", was much moreso about the struggles and trials of four different women with similar backgrounds. The novel takes place in the 1930's, which is my favorite period of time, and opens in Korea. For these reasons alone, I was hooked. It was like taking a glimspe into my grandmother's and my mother's life. It also taught me much of my culture and how Confucius ideals still take hold in Korean society. I was again suprized that this novel was written by a man, especially a caucasian one, because he embodies and depicts things so vividly. He presents the culture beautifully, and it was an experience to be able to walk down through Honolulu. I always love reading about different cultures and different areas of life. This novel depicts four girls who grew up in Korea and who become picture-brides for Hawaii in order to change their fortune, and though it was not as much of a page-turner or tear-grabber as his last one, I will will place this one on m
